SEPTEMBER 19, 20 & 21, 2008

The 2008 Heritage Festival brought together a rich mix of performances, workshops, and tours, plus demonstrations in the Artisan tent, hands-on fun in the Kids’ Corner, Activities & Exhibits, Vendor Booths, and Food. Check the Entertainment page for more information on the performers featured in the schedule below.

FRIDAY, Sept. 19, 2008
Hours: 6–9 pm

HERITAGE FESTIVAL KICK-OFF!

6:00-7:00: Judges at Work
Watch some of your favorite local celebrities sample an array of sweet treats. Which entries will be the winners? Can you predict? Main tent.

7:00-9:00: Best Dessert of the Seacoast Bake-Off!
Sample an amazing array of treats brought to you by Seacoast-area eateries, organizations, and local chefs of all ages. Celebrity and food judges will award prizes to the most delicious entries. Bon appetit! Cost: Adults, $5; children 3-12, $3; under 3 free. All you can eat. Proceeds to benefit Project Graduation. Main tent.

7:00-9:00: King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band
King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band, one of the all-time favorite bands in festival history, returns with their eight-foot alpine horns, yodeling, cow bells—and a few favorite jokes. Main tent.

7:45: Heritage Festival Opening Ceremonies
Newmarket Main Street Corporation honors this year’s Keeper of the Heritage and kicks off the festivities for the start of the 11th annual Newmarket Heritage Festival. Main tent.

8:45: Dessert Winners Announced
The moment you’ve been waiting for: Winners of Best Dessert Bake-Off announced! Prizes will be awarded in several categories:  professional, homemade, and children’s desserts. Main tent.

SATURDAY, Sept. 20, 2008

10:00-12:00: Extreme Air Brunch
Quiche and pancakes, bacon and sausage, muffins and more! Cost: Adults, $6; children 3-12, $4; under 3, free. Proceeds to benefit Extreme Air, New Hampshire's competition jump rope team. Main tent.

10:00-11:30: Historic Mill Tour
Enjoy a guided walk through Newmarket's hard-working past—and its developing future. Guide: Mike Provost, a third-generation mill worker. Meet at main festival entrance.

10:15-11:00: Extreme Air Jump Rope Demo and Workshop!
NH’s award-winning jump rope team performs single rope, pairs, double dutch, and freestyle routines. Workshop to follow—jump along! Workshop Tent.

11:00-11:45: Fantastic Flying Fiddler
Cape Breton-style fiddling with Brendan Carey Block. Main tent.

11:45-12:15: The History & Art of the Decoy
Learn about wildfowl carving with master artisan Fred Dolan. Workshop tent.

12:00-1:30: Downtown Village Tour
Discover the history and architecture of Newmarket's village area, including a stop at the Stone School Museum on Zion’s Hill. Guide: Newmarket native Phil LePage. Meet at main festival entrance.

12:00-3:00 Historic Newmarket Exhibit
Featuring historic photos and memorabilia from the Newmarket Historical Society, and plein air paintings of Newmarket. Downtown/Ampers& Gallery.

12:15-12:45: Indian Dancers
Neha Parikh and her students perform classical dances of India. Main tent.

12:45-1:30: The Thomsons
Join Newmarket’s Ryan Thomson and son Brennish for some lively tunes on fiddle, banjo, pennywhistle, rub board, jaw harp, and more. Workshop Tent.

1:30-2:30: Accordion Warrior
Gary Sredzienski—along with some of his 40 accordions—plays “music of the old country” and more! Main tent.

2:30-3:00: Accordion Workshop
Try a concertina, button box, piano accordion, and a harmonium from India. Workshop Tent.

3:00: Closed: Historic Engine House, Historic Newmarket Exhibit

3:00-3:45:  Irish Dancers
The Murray Irish Dancers perform team dances and award-winning championship routines. Main tent.

3:30-5:00: Cheswell Burying Ground Tour
Visit the graveyard that earned Newmarket a historic preservation award and a historic marker. Guide: Rich Alperin, president of the Newmarket Historical Society.
Meet trolley at main festival entrance.

3:45-4:30: Mr. YooWho
International performer Moshe Cohen shares the art of clowning.Workshop tent.

4:00: Closed: Children’s Tent

4:30-5:45 Chinese Folk Art Workshop
Boston youth group demonstrates traditional folk dances, giant Taiwanese drums, Chinese lions, and the amazing yo-yo or diabolo. Workshop to follow. Main tent.

5:30-7:30: International Soup and Chowder Fest
Sample a taste of tradition, served up by eateries in and around Newmarket. Cost: Adults, $7; children 3-12, $3; under 3, free. (Cost covers three cups of soup.)Proceeds to benefit the Newmarket Main Street Corporation, producers of the Newmarket Heritage Festival. Main tent.

5:30-6:15: Harpsichord Demonstration and Concert
Sixth-generation musician and instrument builder R.P. Hale dons period costume to present a selection of harpsichord and hammer-dulcimer music. Newmarket Public Library.

6:00: Closed: Vendor Booths

6:15-9:00: Dance Party with The Reminisants!
Celebrate the 11th annual Newmarket Heritage Festival with the Reminisants, ”Boston’s best oldies and request band,” playing music that appeals to all generations. Main tent.

9:00 Festival Closes for the evening.

All you can eat! Pancakes and scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, home fries—and more. Cost: Adults, $6; children 3-12, $3; under 3 free. Proceeds to benefit Newmarket Firefighters Association. Main tent.

10:00-11:30: Historic Mill Tour
Enjoy a guided walk through Newmarket's hard-working past—and its developing future. Guide: Mike Provost, a third-generation mill worker. Meet at festival entrance.

10:30-11:30: Voices from the Heart
This 100-voice chorus performs a rich mix of soulful music from many cultural traditions. Main tent.

11:30-12:15: African Drumming Workshop
Join the Akwaaba Drum and Dance Ensemble for an energetic West African drumming workshop (15 drums available).Workshop tent.

12:00-1:30: Downtown Village Tour

1:00-1:45: Family Sing-Along and Rhythm Workshop
Join Music Together teacher Jeanne Russell and friends for some musical fun.
Workshop tent.

1:45-2:30: Akwaaba Drum and Dance Ensemble
The colors and rhythms of Ghana come alive with the drumming and dancing of Theo Martey and friends. Main tent.

2:30-3:00: Blue Hill Brass Quintet
Enjoy a variety of favorite tunes played by five great musicians. Workshop tent.

3:00: Closed: Historic Newmarket Exhibit

3:00-4:00: Festival Barn Raising
Help to “raise high the roof beams” of this shed built by timber framer Al Smith.
Adjacent to artisan tent.

3:00-4:00: TWO: High-Energy Jugglers
Juggling meets the X-games with Matthew and Jason Tardy in this gravity-defying performance. Main tent.

3:00-4:30: Cheswell Burying Ground Tour

4:00-4:30: Improv Workshop

4:30-6:00: Grupo Fantasia Latin Band Dance Party
Bid farewell to this year’s festival with a high-energy, family-friendly Caribbean dance party featuring salsa, merengue and Cuban music. Main tent.
